Training Siberian Huskies
Siberian Huskies are generally considered to be amiable and gentle dogs that are sociable and friendly.
- Always ensure that you do not walk in behind the dog. It should be ensured that the dog follows the owner through the door.
- It should be the dog coming to the owner when he or she returns home and not the other way round. This is especially true because if the owner approaches the dog, it gives the dog the signal that he has the upper hand.
- It should always be ensured that the Husky is fed only after the owner has eaten.
- If the dog appears to be blocking the owner’s path, the owner should command the dog out of the way rather than side stepping or walking over the dog.
How to Reinforce Good Habits: Any time the Husky performs a command that has been given, praise him. Praising and giving treats every time a task is done correctly will reinforce that it is the right thing to do. Any time the Husky is praised, making sure to use high pitched enthusiastic voice will help in achieving the desired results sooner.
How to Eliminate Bad Habits: The first thing to do in order to eliminate bad habits is to catch the Husky in act. This is especially important because the dog should understand the reason for punishment. One thing to do to let the dog know that it has done something wrong is to use a stern voice to remonstrate the dog. Also, make sure that the name is not used while reprimanding. A good idea would be to use words like “Bad Dog” to let the dog know that it is the wrong behavior. While training a Husky, the owner should always try and maintain eye contact. This is especially so because Huskies in a pack is said to talk using their eyes. Also, always reprimand the Husky in ways he would understand. This means to say that a growl, or grunt or a rough shake might help the Husky understand that it was not desirable behavior. While keeping in mind these points, it is also important that the owner understands that each dog will learn at their own pace and therefore, the training should not be rushed.
