Characteristics of Siberian Huskies

If you have ever watched a Siberian Husky, you might have noticed that, he isn’t a fearful watch dog. They are rather friendly, fun loving dogs that enjoy goofing around. These dogs were initially bred to be worker dogs to be used to pull light loads. They can be called as wanderers or the escape artists regarding to a few of their common traits. Here are a few common characteristics of Siberian Huskies. These could appear amusing you as reader but not always as owner.

  • Siberian Huskies will never make themselves as good watch dogs: Even though they are fiercely loyal to their owners. This is because these dogs have the inborn instinct to be a part of a pack. They look at strangers as either a new friend or a new member of their pack.

  • Highly adaptable to new environments: A positive trait of a husky is, it can easily adapt to a new environment. Also, this dog is considered as one of the most sociable dogs. This means that they can make friends quite easily.

  • Siberian Huskies are quite nimble on their feet. They have a light trot and have a beautiful gait.

  • As an addition to the previous point: Siberian Huskies are quite agile and they are fast runners. This also means that, this is a dog that should be kept tightly on leash. They were originally used to pull sleds and this instinct still remains strong in them. When given a chance they will run off and not likely stop at the owner’s command. It would be a good idea to take a Husky out for a run. If possible, in an enclosed space so that they can enjoy their occasional runs.

  • Siberian Huskies enjoy digging holes in backyards (or wherever). They regard it as a hobby, irrespective whether the owner likes it or not. It would be a good idea to define a space for them to dig holes. Be sure, that they will have your backyard filled with holes.

  • Siberian Huskies are quite independent and stubborn. This means that they will not readily obey your commands. They will be in this stance until they accept you as their pack leader. Therefore, it is essential to use a lot of positive learning techniques in training them. Be also stable while issuing commands to Siberian Huskies.

  • They get easily bored. As mentioned earlier, these dogs were originally bred to pull sleds and carry loads. These dogs are highly energetic. They can turn quite destructive, if not given a chance to use up their energy. So, be prepared to come a house strewn with chewed objects and torn papers, if you don’t give them enough exercise.

  • Siberian Huskies enjoy companionship. Siberian Huskies are dogs that enjoy living in a pack. It would be a good idea to have a second dog or someone at home who accompany your your husky. Thus your Husky play with them and enjoy the day as he feels more comfortable.

  • They have increased preying instinct. The Huskies can be trained to live with other smaller animals. However, these dogs will prey on any small animal that might cross their path.

The characteristics mentioned above can make the Siberian Husky as a very demanding dog. Do not think it’s difficult to manage them. You can easily train them by understanding them and using proper techniques. If you can give him what he needs, he could be a gentle companion. He amuses you endlessly.
