Training Problems of Siberian Husky

Getting a Siberian Husky for yourself is all good if you are an experienced dog owner. However, if you are a novice when it comes to being a dog owner, getting a Siberian Husky can be a little over ambitious as these dogs are not easily trainable.

This is because a Husky is primarily a worker dog and is known to be independent and willful. The ability to make decisions, which is considered a strong feature in a worker dog used to pull sleighs or sleds, can backfire if what you are looking for is a domestic pet.

There are a few common problems that are found while training Siberian Huskies which have been outlined below:
  • Resistance to authority and commands: A Siberian Husky is not really an aggressive dog. Though generally considered an amiable dog, the one characteristic that stands out in this dog is its strong will and independent thinking. This in other words could mean trouble for the owner because these dogs will refuse to obey any instructions or commands which they do not feel interested or inclined to obey. It is found that generally male Huskies are more resistant to authority than female Huskies.

The only way to overcome the resistance to authority in a Siberian Husky is to assume the position of the pack leader. This will require firmness while dealing with the dog at all the times so that he realizes that you are the leader and he is the follower dog. The Huskies are known for their rebelliousness and it will take a good deal of obedience training to ensure that your Husky will finally start following the commands.

  • Difficulty in leash training: It is considered especially difficult to leash train a Siberian Husky. This is because the moment the Husky is outdoors, the innate desire to run captures his mind and the leash is nothing but a restraint to him.

The only way to counter this is to start leash training when your Husky is quite young. The leash training should be started using a harness leash. The only way your Husky is going to learn to stay on leash is to train him to watch your actions and follow you closely.

  • Hyperactivity and restlessness: Another characteristic of a Siberian Husky is the amount of energy he possesses. This is one dog which owing to its predecessors’ usage as working dogs has immense energy. However, this hyperactivity can result in limited attention span and refusal to follow the commands given while training. The only way to counter this would be to ensure that you Husky goes through a good amount of physical and mental exercise. This will also ensure that your dog does not get overly bored and start chewing things or whining and howling.

Though these problems are found in a Siberian Husky, it is not to say that these dogs cannot be trained to be obedient. Their intelligence allows these dogs to grasp the commands quickly. It is the right type of training that is required to ensure that your Husky can be trained successfully.
