Feeding the Siberian Husky

Before moving on to the details about feeding Siberian Huskies, it would be interesting to note the predecessors of Huskies, Chukchi dogs were bred to work hard on a small amount of food provided.

They had been bred to be able to derive the maximum amount of nutrients from the small amount of food provided to them. And this quality is one which has been passed on to the Siberian Huskies as well. The Huskies are generally considered to non-fussy eaters. Also, it is a known fact that they tend need smaller amount of food than other breeds of the same size generally requires. However, there are a few guidelines to be followed while feeding the Huskies.

While the Huskies are puppies, they require to be fed three times a day like a normal baby would be. The feeding should be done during early morning, afternoon and evening. It would be a good idea to feed your Husky puppy at a fixed time every day so that a routine can be set. However, it has to be kept in mind that the Husky will develop a case of diarrhea if overfed. Gradually, your Husky will cut down on his eating and will start having two meals a day when he is 3 to 4 months. And by the time he turns 9 months, it will be a good idea to bring down the feeding to one time a day depending upon the growth rate and size of the puppy.

The best thing to do would be to provide your Husky with home cooked diet or a raw diet. If this is the case, the diet can consist of a mix of fish and poultry as this will provide the Husky with the right amount of proteins, fat and carbohydrates. So, a Husky, if kept on home cooked diet can be given salmon, fresh water fish and chicken.

However, if this is going to inconvenient, then you have to do the necessary research to ensure that you give your Husky the right kind of food which will give him the nutrients required. However, when deciding on the diet of your Husky, you should always ensure that the amount of protein and fat in the food is high. At the same time the quantity of carbohydrates in the diet is not required to be exceptionally high for a Husky. This is especially important, because as mentioned earlier, the Huskies are dogs that consume a smaller amount of food than other breeds. And these points should be kept in mind while deciding on which dog food to choose for the Husky.

The best idea while deciding the diet for your Husky will be to consult the veterinarian in order to decide the best dog food to be provided to the dog. One thing to keep in mind, however, is to avoid canned dog food as it is said to cause diarrhea in dogs.

However, the final decision on whether you want to provide your dog only dry food, or a mix of dry food and raw diet, or a mix of dry food and home cooked food depending upon your Husky’s requirement.
