Basic Obedience Commands
Owning a pet Husky can be a dream for dog lovers. However, this is only the beginning of the journey.
As Huskies are dogs that used to live traditionally as a pack, the first thing to do is to establish self as the pack leader. This way, the Husky will look up at you as the alpha and therefore will display minimum resistance to the commands. It is also noted that the sooner the training begins, the better trained your Husky will be. Additionally, the one point to keep in mind is that it requires a lot of patience and repeated training to ensure that the Husky learns to obey your commands.
Let's have look at some basic husky obedience commands.
Teaching your husky to sit: This is a fairly easy command which can be taught. In order to train your Husky to sit, always hold treats or toys above the Husky’s head level so that he has to look up at the treat. The dog would naturally move into a sitting posture. If the Husky refuses to sit, apply gentle pressure to force your Husky to sit.
Teaching your husky to leave an object: In order to establish this command, keep a toy or treat in front of the dog and used the command “leave it” while keeping you hand close to the object. If your Husky attempts to take the toy or treat, cover the toy or treat and repeat the command.
How to teach the husky to watch you: In order to teach your Husky this command, always call the dog to attention first. Use the command and place a treat in front of his face which is brought to your forehead level gradually. Repeat the same steps and gradually stop using the treat.
Teaching your husky to come to you: In order to have this command taught, have your Husky leashed and sit across him at a distance. Use the “Watch” command to get his attention. Keep a treat in your hands and ask your dog to come over with the command “Come”. If he doesn’t come, gently pull on the leash so that he is forced to come to you. Once he comes, hand over the treat to him and repeat the steps.
These are the basic obedience commands that a Husky requires to be taught. While teaching all these commands, always keep treats handy and shower them with praises as huskies, and any other dog for that matter, responds well to praises and treats.
In addition to these basic commands, it is also required your husky is crate trained. This is because Huskies would like to have a private place for themselves to which they can withdraw when they require privacy. The crate training can be achieved by placing the feed, water and treats in the crate and praising the Husky when he enters the crate. This helps in creating a positive feeling about using the crate. However, always make sure that the crates are large and spacious so that the huskies don’t feel uncomfortable in there.
These are the few basic obedience training commands that can be taught to a Husky. However, there are other commands which you can train your husky in provided you are ready to take the time and effort to engage yourself in training your pet.
